A Whale of Tale - Jonah, 2nd Look

Exploring the possibility of living 38 hrs inside a Whale

After hearing the STORY of Jonah in the last post, some people are probably thinking that is absurd! How could someone live inside the belly of whale for three days? Is it ? We will take a look at this STORY from a scientific standpoint to see if it is in deed possible to survive in a whale's belly without divine intervention.

Oxygen Intake
The whale is an air breathing mammal. It has nostrils on top of it's head and it voluntarily surfaces to take a breath when it chooses. Having said this, if a whale were to keep it's mouth closed after swallowing a person, it would stop any water from entering it's belly.

Anatomy of the Stomach
The Whale actually has 3 stomach chambers; the forestomach, main stomach, two connecting chambers and a pyloric stomach. The importance in this study of this stomach pattern is that the forestomach  acts as a holding cell for later meals. A study performed on the systematic importance of the whale's stomach showed that there is little digestion in the forestomach, any digestion is caused by reflux of the main stomach fluids.

 James Bartley and Jonah
There is an old story about a man named James Bartley who was said to have survived being swallowed by a whale in 1891, but his skin was bleached and he went blind. In Jonahs prayer he said "The engulfing waters threatened me, the deep surrounded me; seaweed was wrapped around my head. " Its said that the seaweed such as kelp could of protected him from the digestive process allowing him to be released with little bodily damage.
Scientifically possible or not we believe !
When it comes to the word of God, we don't have to know things are physically possible to believe in them. That's what faith is all about; reading the word and believing what it says. If God were to reach down from Heaven for the whole world to see, his presence would be undoubtedly so, therefore eliminating the need for faith.

Hebrews 11

1 Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see

3 By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.

A Whale of a Tale - Jonah 1st look

Jonah was swallowed by a fish,
he made quite a tasty dish,
freedom was his only wish,
from his watery jail....

If you haven't heard the story of Jonah it goes like this: Jonah was told by God to preach the good news of God to a certain group of people. He didn't want to do God's will, so he tried to run away as far as he could go, he got onto a boat and a storm came, so the crew threw him in the water. At the very moment he went in, he was swallowed up into the belly of a great whale or fish for 3 days. Jonah prayed to his Lord God and he was spat onto dry land.
And after all was said and done, he did God's will...

Have you ever tried to run from God ? Sometimes in life we know what is truly right but we choose to do things our way. One thing that believers around the world will agree on, is when you are saved you can't run from God. He knows and sees all things. He will literally pick you up and put you in your place. Sometimes we get mad at God because we want to make our own decisions, but God's love is too great. We may think we were better off, but time always tells the whole STORY.  When we sit down and look back on those situations we can see why and how much better off we are. Praise God for saving us from immanent disaster in what WE wanted!  It is said, for the believer's lives; God works all things together for good.

ISAIAH 55:7-8
7 Let the wicked forsake their ways
   and the unrighteous their thoughts.
Let them turn to the LORD, and he will have mercy on them,
and to our God, for he will freely pardon.  8 “For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
neither are your ways my ways,”
            declares the LORD.
